We use the terms human growth and development to understand the process a child follows in growing up. A teacher who is responsible for a new wave of children in each year in his classroom must knowledge he can decide at what level it is appropriate to each them.

Today, we conceive of childhood as a highly eventful and unique time of life that says an important foundation for the adult years and is highly differentiated from them.We consider childhood as a special term of growth and change and we take vital measures for educating our children.

We know that child develops partly like all other children, partly like some other children and partly like no other children. As teachers we usually manage and educate groups of same or similar age children.

We generally use both terms growth and development simultaneously. But there may be made some distinction between these two. As we have explained above development involves growth. But it is not only limited to growth but also to decay.

Another point worth noticing is that the process of growth is continuous throughout the life of the individual whether the cognition or socio emotional changes take place or not. A child may grow in years but his mental development may be restricted. Still it is to be noticed that development remains linked to growth even though it may not be similar or same for all the children.

It indicates the changes in the quality or character rather than in quantitative aspect. Growth is used in purely physical terms. It generally refers to an increase in size, length, height and weight of an individual.

Development is a wider and comprehensive term.

Growth describes the changes which takes place in particular aspects of the body and behaviour of an organism.

Development is a continuous process. It goes from womb to tomb. It does not end with the attainment of maturity. The changes how so ever, small they may be continue throughout the life span of an individual. Growth does not continue throughout life. It stops when maturity has been attained.

Such changes are assessed through keen observation in behavioural situations. The changes produced by through are the subject of measurement. They may be quantified. For instance, size can be measured in meters and weight in kilos

Development is also possible without growth as in the cases of some children that they do not gain in terms of height, weight or size.

We refer to the development of 'intelligence' and 'emotions' but growth of "body and brain".


1. Importance of Individual Differences of the Learners : The parents and teacher should remember that there are individual variations in the rates of growth and every child develops in a unique way. Hence, they should pay individual attention to every child. It stipulates the provision of diversified course and modifying all activities according to needs and interests of various stages of growth.

2. Importance of Developing Motivation : Every stage of growth has its possibilities and limitations. Teachers and parents should not place undue demands on the child as these lead to mental tension for the child.

3. Importance of Correlation : Teacher should remember that children develop on the principle of interrelatedness of growth. It is, therc.ore necessary for them to search for the principle of correlation.

4. Influence of both : Heredity and Environment: Parents and teachers should remember that it is difficult to change the heredity of the child but environment can be modified.

5. Importance of Doing : "Doing' helps in the development of mental, physical and social skills.

6. Value of Creativity : Children are relative and they need assistance and guidance to develop their creativity.

7. Need of Individual Attention : Each child needs attention and a neglected child in the home or in the class loses interest in work and play.

8. Need of Recognition : For proper development, all children need adequate praise and recognition for their work

9. Satisfaction of Curiosity : Children are curious to learn and respond to new thing with interest.

10. Need of Reasonable Repetition : Children learn through repetition; though excessive repetition tends to kill interest.

11. Need of Satisfaction at Each Stage : In the development of an individual, each stage has development needs peculiar to it and these must be taken note of.
