Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation B. Ed Notes

 

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) mentions to a school based evaluation, which covers all features of school activities connected to child’s development.


CCE is a continuous and uniform/systematic assessment of the proper development of children, in which all features of development are widely estimated through various methods and devices.


Meaning of Continuous - The term ‘continuous’ refers to regularity/orderly/systematic in assessment.


Meaning of Comprehensive – The 2nd term related with Continuous and comprehensive evaluation is ‘comprehensive’.

The term ‘comprehensive’ suggests that evaluation of learners’ performance is follow through in both scholastic and co-scholastic areas.


 

Definition of CCE


The National Policy of Education (NPE 1986), which declares that Comprehensive and Continuous Evaluation should include both scholastic and non-scholastic features of evaluation, spread over the total duration of instructional time.

 

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 also suggests that a school-based continuous and comprehensive evaluation system be formed in order to : 


  • Minimize the stress of the children, 
  • Create evaluation comprehensive and regular or uniform, 
  • Give space for the teachers for creative teaching ,
  • Give a tool for recognition and for producing learners with greater skills.


Continuous and comprehensive evaluation was a process of assessment, authorised by the Right to Education Act, of India in 2009 in Article 29(i).


As a part or role of this scheme, students' marks were replaced by grades which were evaluated by a series of scholastic and Co-scholastic evaluations along with academics.


1st time CCE pattern was presented by CBSE for class 9 in 2009. And all over the country except Jammu and Kashmir, CCE was presented on 1st April 2010.

 

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation

   

Aims of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation:


  • The main aim of CCE was to estimate or appraise every characteristics of the child during their presence at the school.

  • CCE helps in reducing the stress on children.

  • Create assessment comprehensive & regular or systematic or uniform. 

  • Give space for the teachers for creative teaching.

  • Give a tool for detection & corrections.

  • Produce or make learners with greater skill. 

  • Learning the development of children in different groups in different paths.

  • Finding out the changes in the behaviour or performance of children.

  • Helping each child in learning and proper development.

  • To develop creativity in the children. 

  • Finding out the personal and special needs of the child.

  • To create appropriate teaching plans to control learning difficulties in children.

  • To know what children are interested in.

  • To promote learning in the class.

  • To reduce the fears and pressures that opposes children about their examinations and motivate them for self-assessment.


 

Objectives of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation:

 

  • It constructs the process of teaching and learning a learner-centred activity.

  • To produce the assessment process an necessary part of the teaching-learning process.

  • To create a fair judgment and take timely decisions for learner’s growth, learning process, learning speed, and learning environment.

  • To give scope for learners for self-assessment.

  • To use the evaluation process for developing students’ achievement by detection and correction.

 

Functions of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation:

 

  • CCE helps the teacher to organise successful teaching strategies.

  • Continuous evaluation distributes to detect weaknesses and allows the teacher to work out on certain individual learners. 

  • Through continuous assessments, students will be able to know their strengths and weaknesses.

  • CCE helps in identifying or diagnosing changes in attitudes and value systems in the children. 

  • Continuous and comprehensive evaluation gives details on the development of students in scholastic and co-scholastic areas which results in predicting the future success of the learners.


 

Principle of continuous and comprehensive evaluation

 

Continuous and comprehensive evaluation and learning process go together. It is only after giving sufficient learning opportunities for the child to evaluate.


The child 's development or progress should be compared to its own past, not with the development or progress of other children.


Different activities should be used according to the child 's learning pace or speed and ability so that they can learn as much as they like.


 

Merits of Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation


1) More Valid


It is more valid than external examinations as it covers all the topics of the syllabus assessment every month or biweekly.


2) Regular and Punctual


Students will become more regular, and punctual. They will try to do their home assignments and class work to the complete satisfaction of all concerned.


3) Discipline


The problem of discipline will remain moderate. 


4) More reliable

 

It is more reliable than external examinations because it covers all the topics of the syllabus.


5) Motivational Value


It motivates and encourages the pupils to work regularly and thoroughly. They work through out the year and don't waste time.



6) Diagnostic Value


It allows us to diagnose or check pupils difficulties in learning. It gives opportunities of find out needs, interests, abilities and aptitude of an individual and shows him the path for the development or progress. 


7) No excessive strain

 

Excessive strain on the students is relaxed. Moral values in students are never allowed to wave.


8 ) Basis of scholarship


It serves as a base for awarding scholarship and giving fee concessions


9) Positive results


It objectives at finding out what the child knows, what he can do and what intelligence he has got rather than at finding out what he does not know, what he cannot do and what intelligence he has got.

 

Demerits of Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation

 

1) Time consuming or time taking process. 


Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation is time consuming.


2) Heavy work load of teachers


The short term evaluation increases the work load for the teachers. Besides, it demands training, efficiency and resourcefulness on the part of teachers.


3) Incomplete without external examination

 

In the absence of external examination, a public examination at the end of the year is very necessary in every plan of evaluation.


4) Increase in number and intensity


Some Bad things like bribery may increase in number and intensity.

  • It is helpful to find out the difficulties faced by the students in the learning order. 

  • Difficulties that students face while learning through it are decreased.

  • It develops student learning by introducing new teaching methods and techniques.

  • Evaluates the learning needs, demands, and abilities of students.

  • Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation helps the students to put their best foot forward and continuously test their own abilities.

  • Recognises ongoing student success daily based on smaller portions.

  • Performance diagnosing extremely important, which should be done regularly.

  • Identifies the special needs of students who are academically challenged.

  • Encourages and motivates students to participate in extra-curricular activities rather than focusing completely on academics.

  • Students' marks were replaced by grades in this CCE plan.

CONCEPT OF CONTINUOUS EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT

 
Continuous assessment means regular and continuous evaluation.

The word durable is used for a fully combined assessment of the process of learning.

The process of education is a continuous process influencing all sectors of the student and must be in continuous evaluation.

Hence continuous assessment plan is called continuous appraisal Or Evaluation plan.

Continuous assessment refers to the examination in which the student's studies and progresses are recorded every month.

 

CONCEPT OF COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION


Comprehensive evaluation is understood as such a process that creates full and comprehensive assessment of all Features of a student's cognitive, affective, and cognitive.

It includes the use of various tools and techniques of evaluating learners.

The valuing of the advances in qualifications covering all academic sectors and of all non - academic practices can be termed as broad - based assessment.
