Meaning And Definitions of Discipline

Discipline is derived from the word discipulus of the Latin language (disciplines) meaning to learn or obey. That is why when we talk of discipline, we mean to act within the limits of the rules.

For this reason, some educationists believe that following the rules is discipline. Some educationists believe that discipline, which is called Discipline in English, originated from the English language Disciple means disciple (शिष्य).

The belief behind this is that the disciple used to follow the rules, laws and traditions prescribed by the Guru since ancient times and lived humbly by accepting his teachings, that was called discipline. According to the ancient concept, discipline was considered a symbol of being in control.

But at present discipline is used in a very broad sense. Today, discipline is considered to be the training of mind and behavior which discipline the behavior and control the emotions and feelings. In today's discipline, special emphasis has been laid on self-discipline and social discipline.

Definitions of Discipline

Various thinkers have expressed their views regarding the concept of discipline, some of which are as follows :

According to T. P. Nunn

"Discipline is the subjection of one's passions and powers to the rule which provides the system of statecraft, in which it produces efficiency and economy where without it there would be inefficiency."

According to Rayburn

“True discipline must be positive and constructive, not negative or destructive; it must build, not destroy. Evidence of positive control Character building is a creative process. Its desirable requirements are not repression and power but expression and judicious sublimation.”

According to Pro. AD Muller

“In the modern context, discipline means to prepare boys and girls for democracy, the purpose of discipline is to cooperate in the development of knowledge, powers, habits, interests and ideals of individuals, so that they can serve themselves, their peers and the whole society can work for upliftment.

According to John Dewey,

“Discipline is rooted in the social conditions of the school. It considers the school as a miniature form of society where the students act as members of the society in the form of the school, so that they can adjust to social life over time.

According to Rousseau and Spencer,

“Let the children suffer the natural consequences for the establishment of discipline. If a child plays with fire, do not forbid him. Once his hand starts burning, he will not do it again and will learn to be disciplined.

When a person begins to mould his thoughts, his actions and his behaviour towards the society, he follows the right path and makes his character good on the right path.

(5) To Establish Harmonious Relations in School

Being disciplined means that every employee working in the school is following the same type of rules. No separate norms of behavior have been set for anyone, that is, all consider themselves to be an integral part of the same system, which results in the mutual relations of the workers working in it. A person who accepts the beliefs of a well-organized and disciplined environment knows what is his position in the group. How should he make relations with his younger ones and how should he make relations with his elders.
