Role of teacher in Environmental Education


Teacher often plays an important role in the development and social change of the country. It is for the execution of important functions by education. The role of the teacher is powerful. Teachers can contribute to environmental awareness in the following ways:


1. Organizing activities in the school by the teacher: 

The teacher gets the school cleaned regularly to prevent the environment from getting polluted.


(a) To clean the rooms and arrange clean water in the hostel of the school.

(b) To operate the system of library and reading room in the school and hostel in a systematic manner.

(c) To make arrangements for drinking water in the school.

(d) To make arrangements for mid-day meal or snacks in the school.

(e) Arranging all things like mirror, nail cutter, shoulder etc. in the school for the students to practice cleanliness related to their body, hair, and nails etc.

(f) To arrange kitchen in the hostel.


2. Programs in different schools – 

Different types of programs should be organized in different schools so that the vision of democratic spirit develops.

 

(a) To conduct elections for the students so that their rights are chosen.

(b) Organization of Bal Sabha.

(c) Arrangements should be made for the preparation, approval and utilization of student parliament's budget.

(d) Small savings system in school.

(e) Arrangement of social festivals in the school.


3. Democratic tendencies: 

Providing environmental education in school through the following medium which develops skills and competencies in democracy are as follows:-


(a) Debate competitions should be organized.

(b) Essay writing competition should be organized whose subject should be the causes of environmental pollution problems and measures to reduce them and how environmental pollution can be stopped etc.

(c) Arrangements should be made to listen to radio and news.


4. Organizing co-curricular activities:- 

Different types of activities can be conducted by the teacher under environmental education by the students so that the environment can be improved such as 

(a) planting trees and conservation of forests (b) wherever it is seen dirty Motivating students to clean and get things done, such as cleaning of rivers, reservoirs, dirty drains of cities, dirt on the road etc.

 

5. Tourism – 

Students should be made to inspect the effects of pollution by taking them to places related to environmental pollution, by telling examples of specific places and self-distractions and pollution through travel and tourism, so that students can observe Can gain experience.


6. Population control – 

For the effort of population control, teachers can go to villages, towns and slums with their qualified students and through audio-visual materials and small plays, they can effectively convey the facts related to population control to the general public.


7. Development of Habits - 

Teachers can develop their students from childhood to adolescence such habits which have lifelong lasting effects like not sleeping under trees at night, not cutting forests, not misusing water. To do this, to keep the environment in and around the house clean, etc.

 

8. Harm from pollution – 

Environmental education is necessary to understand the environment, to know the harm from pollution, to recognize the pollution of air and water, to know the ill effects of destruction of wild life, to pay constant attention to land conservation. 

Students will have to understand activities like 'Chipko Movement' where people's movement is used to stop forest destruction and control air and water pollution, hence such motivation will have to be developed to solve environmental problems.


9. Environmental crisis – 

To understand and reduce the environmental crisis, the teacher can also use the following means, this work is being done by the Department of Education and Environmental Education by the State and Central Government.
