What is the Role of School in Gender Equality ?

 

Meaning of School -

The literal meaning of the school is the place of learning i. e. the house of learning i. e. the place where education is taken. For the word "Vidyalaya", in Anglo language, the word "school" is used by the word "skhola" from Greek language which means "holiday". It seems to be a little strange. But the holiday in ancient Greece was called school. They developed themselves at holiday. During this period they used to do sports and games. Gradually the holidays were converted into the school and the schools came to be called so.

 

Definition of School 

 

According to John Dewey:

The school is a special environment where special functions and occupations are performed through the development of the child 's desired vision.

According to Ross :

Schools are institutions that human beings have set up in an approach to help children prepare for an orderly and well - knit membership in society.

 

According to T.P Nun :

The school should not be primarily regarded as a place where certain knowledge is learnt, but a place where children are trained in certain forms of action, which is the greatest and most important in the world.

School is considered to be the miniature form of society. The school at present is not confined to teaching studies but also plays an important role in the elimination of social evil. The school has a vital role to play in the elimination of gender discrimination and awareness. It is of the following types :-

1. Democratic development of schools:

As India is a democratic country schools must have a democratic outlook. In this system, all persons are equal, in which all citizens have the rights to freedom, equality and justice, and in view of all these similarities in the school, children learn to respect each other and gender discrimination is also lacking.

 

2. Development of entire personality:

Attention should be given not only to the mental development of the child in the schools of today, but also to the development of an entire personality. So as to enable the child to develop his physical, mental, social and economic life. Help in the development of an entire personality and elimination of gender discrimination.

3. Vocational education:

Vocational education for children should also be provided in current schools. Thereby providing for their livelihood in future life. Vocational education also helps in eliminating gender discrimination.

 

4. Adult education :

The present school should also have provision for adult education. So that the problem of illiteracy can be minimized. It also promotes adult education and generates awareness about education among them.

5. System of co education:

The prevalence of co - education in the school is now being noticed. By co - education, children receive not only education together but share ideas with each other, with the co - operation and understanding of the problems and respect and protection of each other.

 

6. Mechanism of teacher training:

The system of teacher training in the school should be so as to raise the standard of schools. The teacher training course will provide knowledge about the qualities of an ideal teacher on gender issues, etc. This will lead to the growth of new thinking streams and generosity of teachers.

 

Importance of School 

 

The importance and necessity of school is necessary both for the child and for the community as it prepares the child to live in the environment of his physical, mental, social, spiritual, professional, etc.

Importance of school are due to following reasons :-

 

1. Arrangement of special environment:

School creates a special environment. In which the life of the child is regular, interesting and normal, the child develops in the environment the physical, mental, moral, spiritual, professional and intellectual, which are of special significance to the life of the child.

2. A link connecting the family and the world:

The child learns a lot from the family. Like love, mercy, sacrifice, discipline, respect, etc. so the family is called the child 's first school, but the circle of the family is limited. Their growth is limited and the school keeps the child together with the family and the world at large. It broadens the mental development of the child and provides information about the world and different cultures.

 

3. Development of cohesion absolute personality:

The child 's education in the family and the community is informal agency. It has no definite purpose and function and the school is a formal agency. Which has definite purpose and action. Who is working for the development of the child. This leads to the development of the personality of the child and a harmonious development of the two.

 

4. Introduction to complexity of life:

The life of man in ancient times was very simple and pleasant. But today the life of man has become quite complicated. Man has to struggle in every field. The school, therefore, helps in acquaint children with these needs so that they can face these complexities in the future.

5. Development of versatile cultural consciousness:

 

When the child comes to school from his family, he comes into contact with the children of other families, culture and communities and receives education together. When others come in contact with him, he begins to know their cultures and feels respected and respected. The school is, therefore, called the principal agency for development of multi - faceted culture.


6. School is the best place for education rather than home:

 

School is considered a better place of education than home. For the child learns more in the school than at home. In school the child comes into contact with other children and learns many things from them, such as his habits, interests, thoughts, etc. As children in school become more disciplined than home and achieve their objectives, the child learns more in school than he does from home.

7. Build educated citizens:

 

School is the only institution that forms educated citizens because in a democratic country an educated citizen builds a good country. To promote education alone, free and compulsory education has been provided so that more and more citizens are educated, it can be said that the school is the only institution where educated citizens are formed.

8. Cooperation of various causes:

 

Without the cooperation of the school agencies like family, community and state agencies, the school cannot achieve its objectives. These agencies are of vital importance for the school, and the school should establish connectivity with them.
