General Principles of Social Science Teaching

The aim of education is to make a person socially useful. Successful teaching is based on basic general principles :

1) The principle of establishing relationship with life

It is necessary to relate the subject matter with the real life of the students.

According to John Dewey, 'Education is life.' By establishing the relation of the subject matter with the environment of the students, the knowledge of the subject matter can be gained more easily and at a faster pace.

Social studies being the analysis of human relations, it is necessary to establish relation with subject matter of real life. Meaning, the curriculum of social science teaching should be related to real life.

2) Theory of Interest

For successful learning, it is necessary to develop interest in the subject matter.

Teaching is successful only when the students are interested in the subject matter. The work in which he is interested, he completes the work using all his powers. Students will study the subject matter engrossingly only when interest is developed.

In order to make social science teaching successful, it is necessary for the students to be interested in the subject matter. With the help of various means, students can be interested in the subject matter.

According to Pinsent, "Unless the students have an active interest. Till then the best work of teaching will not happen."

3) Theory of Motivation

Motivation is the internal power that generates action, which makes a person move towards his goal.

When motivated, the student becomes active and takes interest in his work. Its positive result is on the acquisition of knowledge.

Before transmitting new knowledge, it is necessary to motivate the social science teacher to teach them. Teachers can motivate students with the help of various means and mechanisms.

4) Principle of action

Activity has an important contribution in education. There are various opportunities to make students active in social science teaching. Activity is the basic and psychological basis of education.

The social science teacher should always try to make the students active and socially efficient individuals.

According to Rayburn, "The principle of student's activity has the first importance in the entire teaching."

(5) Principle of definite purpose

Education is a purposeful action. The objectives of social science teaching can be accomplished through curriculum and co-curricular activities.

Certain and planned efforts are required for the fulfillment of certain objectives. Teachers and students should know the objectives of social science teaching.

Basic Principles of Social Studies

6) Theory of Selection

According to the ability, interest and need of the students, it is necessary to select useful and beneficial knowledge and make it available to the students.

According to Rayburn, "The principle of selection is very important and the success of the teacher's work depends a lot on the ability of good selection." Ability to choose is very important and necessary in social science teaching.

7) Theory of Planning

Planning saves labour, time and money. Before presenting the knowledge to the students, its planning is necessary. Planning is important in making teacher's teaching successful.

Prior planning of syllabus, course objectives, teaching method and system, educational aids, material, board writing etc. is necessary before class teaching.

8) Principle of Partition

To make the subject matter easy, their presentation should be in gradual steps. The steps should be arranged in an orderly manner so that it can reach from one step to another.

9) Theory of Democratic Behavior

Creating a democratic environment is the main objective of social science teaching. Democratic behavior is the way of life.

It is important in today's era to acquire democratic behavior in life. It begins with the classroom and school environment.

The behavior of the teacher with the students should be in the form of a friend, colleague and guide. Democratic behavior of the students in the class should be allowed by the teacher.

The behavior of the teacher should be neutral in the class and outside the class. With the help of social science teaching, students can develop the qualities of co-operation, empathy, independent thinking, decision making etc.

10) Principle of frequency

Repetition is needed for the students to make the acquired knowledge permanent. Psychologist Thorndike has propounded the principle of frequency. The principle of frequency can be followed according to the need of the students.
