What is Educational Measurement?


Under education, if we use mathematical units to measure the knowledge of a student, then it is called educational measurement. All types of measurement done in the field of education come under educational measurement.

Under the educational measurement, apart from the academic achievement of the students, their intelligence, ability to remember, personality, interest, way of learning, etc., many things are measured.


In educational measurement, apart from the students, teachers, other employees associated with educational work, parents, people of the society etc. also have a deep connection with the process of education.

Difference between qualitative and quantitative measurement: -


Under educational measurement, all types of persons, objects, their qualities and their characteristics are described in the educational process. The description of these qualities or characteristics of them can be qualitative or quantitative.

For example, calling people male or female based on their gender is an example of qualitative measurement. 

In the quantitative description of a quality or feature, the quantity of the quality or feature present in a person or thing is told. For example, Neha's height is 5 feet 5 inches, this is an example of quantitative measurement.

Meaning of educational measurement according to S.Stevens: -

Measurement is the process of assigning marks to objects according to some accepted rules.– S.Stevens 


According to Marrison, the meaning of educational measurement: -

“Measurement is basically a part of the process by which the teacher gives numerical form to any characteristic of the student.”– marison 

According to Richard H. Lindemann the meaning of educational measurement is :-

“Measurement may be defined as assigning a number from a set of numbers to each element of a set of persons and things according to some accepted rule.”– Richard H. Lindemann

Measurement is of utmost importance in education for students, teachers, parents and society. 

With the help of measurement, students get to know the extent of their academic knowledge, which creates a sense of motivation, self-confidence and competition in them, as well as reveals their shortcomings.


The measurement process is as important for teachers as it is for students. Through educational measurement, the teacher gets help in finding out the deficiency in the syllabus of the subject and teaching plan, teaching material etc. and to make changes in them.

With the help of educational measurement, the parents and family members of the students come to know about their educational progress, interest, ability, ability, personality, shortcomings etc., through which the parents try to overcome the shortcomings of the students.


Using the information obtained from educational measurement, the officials who decide the policy of education also get help in the policy of education and their implementation in the education system.
