Need of Curriculum

Curriculum is considered to be a very important requirement to make the teaching-learning process successful. Without this the teaching learning process cannot be made successful.

Curriculum is such a tool through which all round development of the student is possible. There should be development in the curriculum as per the time and circumstances so that the students not only get the knowledge of history through the curriculum but also become aware of the present and future problems along with it. With this they can be able to solve the problems of present and future.

Expressing his views on the importance or utility of curriculum,

Cunningham writes that "it (curriculum) is a tool in the hands of the artist (teacher) with the help of which he can transform his material (student) into his ideal (student) purpose) builds in his Kalagraha (school).

Curriculum is a means to achieve the objectives of education and the selection of teaching methods is also done by the teacher according to the curriculum. Thus curriculum is important for both objectives and methods of teaching. Along with this, the curriculum is considered an important part of formal education.

Formal education is possible only in schools, colleges, universities etc. The curriculum for such education is prepared on the basis of the needs and circumstances of that time. It is only through the teaching-learning process that the student makes his all-round development. This development can happen well only when the curriculum is also designed properly. A certain curriculum cannot bring about the complete development of the student, so the curriculum should be developed and changed according to time and circumstances.

The need of the course can also be clarified by the following points :

  1. Well organized education system
  2. Attainment of Objectives
  3. Source of Acquiring Knowledge
  4. Determination of Study Material
  5. Helpful in Maintaining the Standard

  13. Development of Continuous Experiences
  14. To get Knowledge of Various Subjects
  15. Proper Use of Local Sources
  16. Curriculum as a Source
  17. Curriculum and School Environment
  18. Importance of Activities in Curriculum

Well organized education system

The prevailing education system can be organized by the curriculum. This helps in deciding at which level of education, which subjects are to be taught, which activities are to be performed and which experiences are to be provided. With the help of curriculum itself, it is convenient to decide which competencies, attitudes and interests are to be developed in the students at different levels.

Attainment of Objectives

To meet the educational aspirations and needs of the society, first of all the objectives of education are determined and to achieve these objectives the curriculum is designed and developed. Attainment of educational objectives is impossible in the absence of curriculum and in its absence teaching work is also not possible.

Source of Acquiring Knowledge

This world is full of knowledge or mysteries. Man is always eager to know this knowledge and secrets, but he can know this knowledge only through the course. The curriculum is designed on the basis of knowledge acquisition. By acquiring knowledge man increases his experiences so that he can lead a good life in the society.

Determination of Study Material

The syllabus tells us what to study. With its help, it helps in determining the course material for different levels and classes of education. The syllabus itself tells what is to be taught in different classes. Where there is no well-defined curriculum, it becomes difficult to decide what should be taught by the teacher.

Helpful in Maintaining the Standard

If the curriculum is fixed, it helps in maintaining the standard of education. Curriculum is the element that brings uniformity in the level of education in different periods and societies. It is possible to do a comparative study of two or more education systems only on the basis of curriculum. With the analysis of curriculum, we can also analyze the rise and fall of the level of education to a great extent.

Helpful in Evaluation Process

Due to the syllabus, the evaluation process becomes simple, easy and scientific. Proper evaluation of the abilities and capabilities of the students is possible only when there is a definite curriculum. Evaluation is not possible in the absence of syllabus. If evaluation is done in the absence of curriculum, it will lack validity and reliability.

Development of Democratic Values

The present era is the era of democracy. Where all the citizens are considered equal, on the other hand they have the right to get education without any discrimination.

Everyone has the right to equality and freedom in a democracy, due to which the qualities of generosity, justice, fraternity, collective life etc. are created in them. This quality is inculcated in the students only through the school curriculum.

These qualities are considered helpful in developing democratic values in the students.

Fulfillment of Needs

Every student studying in school has many needs. He fulfills these needs through the curriculum itself. Along with the child, every nation and society also has its own needs Fulfillment of all these is also possible through the curriculum.

Every society and nation wants that its citizens should develop patriotism, good citizenship ano sense of duty towards the nation. This can be possible only through the curriculum. The curriculum itself can be helpful in developing such qualities in the citizens. The school caters to all these by preparing the curriculum on the basis of the needs of the nation, society and the child.

Helpful in Preparing Text-books

With the help of syllabus, it is possible to make sure text-books. In the absence of syllabus, general books can be written, but not textbooks.

We also know that it is not possible to provide systematic form of education in the absence off text-books.

Selection of Proper Teaching Method

Curriculum determines the teaching methods. Teaching methods are used according to the curriculum. This is the reason why the teaching methods of Hindi language are different from the teaching methods of Chemistry. In the absence of a curriculum, it becomes very difficult for the teacher to choose teaching methods.

Saving of Time and Energy

Oue to the curriculum, teachers and students are saved from many unnecessary activities. They keep their activities confined within the boundaries of the curriculum, thereby saving their time and energy.

It is because of the curriculum that the teacher is able to decide what and when to teach. He is able to plan his teaching and the students also know what they have to study and when. Due to the syllabus, they do not need to wander here and there. This gives convenience to both the student and the teacher.

The Set Criteria for Teachers

In the teaching-learning process, the curriculum is carried forward by the teacher. The curriculum sets the standards for the teachers as to how the teacher should deliver the curriculum to the students. All the subjects cannot be easily taught by a single teacher. Therefore, the curriculum sets the standards for the teachers. The teacher should have proper knowledge of his subject so that the educational objectives can be achieved easily.

Development of Continuous Experiences

Curriculum is the result of continuous and sequential development of experiences because everything changes according to time and circumstances, similarly curriculum develops experiences continuously and sequentially.

The curriculum plays a very important role in the continuous and systematic development of experiences in the student, because the student is provided with knowledge in a sequence, such as the child first understands his family and the surrounding environment, and then he is given information about the national and international level. This development goes on continuously and sequentially.

To get Knowledge of Various Subjects

The syllabus plays an important role in providing knowledge about various subjects to the students. It is through the curriculum that we get detailed knowledge about various subjects like science, philosophy, geography, sociology and history etc. The curriculum binds various subjects in a single thread and prepares the students to use them in their lives. These subjects prepare the students to run their daily life smoothly.

Proper Use of Local Sources

While preparing the curriculum, local sources are used more. When students take the curriculum in class or school, they get knowledge about their local sources. They learn to use those sources well.

They can use local sources according to thein needs, which increases their knowledge.

Therefore, local sources have an important place in the curriculum which helps in meeting the basic needs of the students.

Curriculum as a Source

The curriculum is also needed to develop the students in their lives. When students go to school, they prepare themselves for social and economic life. The school provides support to the students by prescribing the curriculum. They develop themselves fully and become good citizens in the society.

Educationists and philosophers prepare the curriculum based on the needs of the society.

The curriculum is also tailored based on the interests of the students. Changes in curriculum are necessary with the passage of time. These changes meet the needs of the society.

Therefore, it is clear that the curriculum in a school is that tool which every student has to adopt for the fulfillment and development of his objectives.

Curriculum and School Environment

It is very important to have proper environment in a school to run the curriculum smoothly. If the curriculum is designed on the basis of the development and interests of the students, then to run that curriculum, the school creates such an environment through which the activities included in the curriculum are possible.

If the curriculum is comprehensive, but the school does not provide a good environment to complete that curriculum, then even if the curriculum is good, it does not reach the students. It is the responsibility of the school to provide all the means and environment for the completion of the curriculum which has been created for the students, so that the curriculum can be developed. If the dynamic environment is not there in the school, then the curriculum cannot reach the students completely. Due to this, students are not able to take advantage of the course properly.

Importance of Activities in Curriculum

By including activities in the curriculum, students are made proficient and capable of doing everything. There are various activities related to the students in a school which help in the development of the students. Curriculum is not only related to the classroom, but it also includes co-curricular activities, library, laboratories, workshops, playground, activities that take place in the boundary of the school. This develops the power of learning by doing in children. It also includes the experiences of students, teachers and other staff who are used to implement the curriculum.

CONCLUSION

Thus, curriculum has a very important place in the teaching-learning process. Without this, the teaching-learning process cannot be imagined nor can the objectives of education be achieved.

Achievement of educational objectives is possible only through the curriculum. Along with this, the development of curriculum is required for the overall development of the student development of democratic values, acquisition of knowledge, fulfillment of needs, selection of teaching methods, development of good citizenship and encouragement of research work etc. The development of student, society and nation is possible only through the curriculum.
