LABORATORY METHOD OF SCIENCE TEACHING

What is Laboratory method ?

Laboratory method provides opportunities for students to become familiar with the facts themselves through personal experience. In this method, the teacher supplies the necessary instructions and materials that the student will be required to impart. Students gain personal experiments and experience and learn some rules and principles by reaching a result with proper observation. The teacher occasionally looks after their functions and gives them proper guidance as and when necessary. Knowledge acquired by demonstrative method is the most active knowledge than all other methods and has knowledge by personal self - direct experience.

The definition of laboratory method has been given by a scholar as follows, “ In laboratory method we mean that students should be taught in such a way that they have the opportunity to experiment and observe themselves. Teachers must observe their actions and get students done in writing. Students are definitely active in lab teaching. Students are more active in teaching through laboratory method than in any other method. In the laboratory method, every child experimented by himself and by his own effort seeks to arrive at results."

PROPERTIES OF LABORATORY METHOD

  • This method provides training in the scientific method to the children.
  • In this method, all the children of the class actively try to reach a certain goal.
  • Students check scientific results themselves, so they become completely clear in their minds.
  • Children try to solve problems by experimenting and testing.
  • They develop a sense of responsibility.
  • Children's observation power develops.

DEMERITS OF LABORATORY METHOD

  • Providing individual equipment for each student makes this difficult.
  • This consumes a lot of time of the students as not every student can do the experiment successfully.
  • It cannot be used successfully at the junior level.
  • Retarded students sabotage equipment more.
  • According to Rawat and Aggarwal, "There is no special benefit for most of the students to acquire proficiency in yoga method because they hardly get an opportunity to use it in the future life."

TIPS FOR LABORATORY METHOD

  • The teacher should guide and supervise the students properly while doing the experiment.
  • The problems which arise while teaching in the class should be solved in the laboratory itself.
  • Should be disputed after use.
  • Before going to the laboratory there should be a debate between the teacher and the students.
  • Students should not be promised to do the experiment, rather interest should be created in them to do the experiment.
