Education During Adolescence

 

Adolescence is one of the most difficult, important and delicate times in life. Adolescent girls and boys undergo revolutionary changes in their physical, mental and emotional levels during this period.

Adolescents in academic terms are considered to be very important. If guidance is provided at this stage, then adolescents will have a greater chance of making progress in the direction they want.

In order to build up the future lives of adolescents, it is the duty of the parents, teachers and society to provide them with the right and planned education.


The form of education in adolescence should be as under :

 

1. Education for Physical Development


There are many important and revolutionary physical changes that take place in adolescence, and it is necessary to focus on making the body healthy, strong and well - formed. Therefore, during adolescence, provision of healthy food, physical exercise and sports should be made.


2.  Education for Mental Development


In adolescence, proper education should be provided to bring out the best and all - round development of mental faculties. The mental capacity, observation, reasoning, thought power, memory and imagination of adolescents should be developed in accordance with their interests and abilities.

In order to assuage the curiosity tendency, arrangements should be made to visit natural and historical places. The library, reading room, laboratory, tourism, debating competition, conducting text - cum - communication activities like literary seminars should train their observation and power of expression. Aesthetic values of adolescents can be developed through music, painting, etc.


3. Education for Emotional Development

 

Emotional life changes during adolescence. Adolescent struggles with a lot of emotions. He feels difficulty in understanding the right duty. Education must endeavour to absorb or guide negative emotions and develop the best. Emotions should be developed through art, literature, music and cultural programmes.


4.  Education for Social Development


Juvenile gives great importance to his group. Therefore, In schools, groups that are eligible for membership should be set up so that adolescent can develop their social development. Collective action, community sports, scouting, cultural programmes, etc., can be a useful way to develop good social attitudes and social relationships among adolescents.


5.  Education for Religious and Moral Development


Adolescence is one of the constant counter - thoughts. Since they cannot determine what is right and wrong, religious and moral education should be imparted to adolescents in the family and in the school. The response of parents and teachers can be made to develop a moral character of adolescents by producing ideal behaviour.


6.  Education for Individual Differences

 

The personal differences and needs of adolescents in their adolescence are of vital importance from the academic perspective. Their education should be arranged in such a way that all the adolescent girls and boys receive education in accordance with their different tastes, attitudes and qualifications. 

Educational and vocational guidance should also be provided in schools so that they can choose courses and professions to suit their interests, needs and circumstances. Due to the difference in the interests and needs of the boy and the girl child, their courses also require differences.


7.  Sex Education


Most of the juvenile problems are related to their sexual instinct. Sex is considered a taboo subject in Indian families. There is shame in talking about it. This is why the sexual education of adolescents in the Indian environment is hardly noticed at all. Ignorance of the subject often have a disastrous effect on the teenager. In fact it is necessary to provide the limited sex education during adolescence so that their sexual instinct is directed towards the right direction.


8.  Use of Proper Teaching Methods

 

In adolescence ,observation, test, reasoning and thinking instincts is more. Therefore, while educating the adolescents one should use methods which would satisfy them and develop their various mental power/ capacities.


9.  Adult Type Behaviour towards Adolescence


Adolescents have a strong desire to have due importance and status. They should not treat a child as a child but behave as adults. Young people should be allowed to take responsible action independently, not under unnecessary controls and restrictions. The criminal attitude of adolescents can be checked by avoiding annoyance, disappointment and disregard.

Adolescence is an important phase in shaping the future life of children. Therefore, teachers and parents should be very careful in planning and handling the education of the adolescents, so that the child can successfully lead the path of excellence in life.
